We are delighted to announce that Martin Blackledge (Institut de Biologie Structurale (IBS), France), Yoshitaka Ishii (Institute of Science Tokyo, Japan), and Harald Schwalbe (Goethe University Frankfurt, Germany) were elected Fellows of ISMAR in August 2026.
Martin Blackledge: For pioneering the application of NMR spectroscopy to intrinsically disordered proteins, including the development of integrated ensemble methodologies and computational frameworks that have helped define the field, and for elucidating the roles of protein disorder in viral replication, cellular signaling, and biological function.
Yoshitaka Ishii: For pioneering contributions to fast-MAS and proton-detected solid-state NMR methodology, with applications spanning amyloid assemblies, paramagnetic biomolecules, and functional materials, and for outstanding service to the international magnetic resonance community.
Harald Schwalbe: For pioneering contributions to biomolecular NMR, including the development of dynamic ensemble and time-resolved approaches for RNA, DNA, and proteins, and for leadership in advancing international collaboration and strengthening NMR research networks across Europe and beyond.
Fellows are elected based on their contributions to the field of magnetic resonance, both through the impact of their research on the magnetic resonance community and through their efforts to advance the appreciation of magnetic resonance in the broader scientific community. Fellowship in ISMAR carries with it the responsibility to serve as an advocate for the field of magnetic resonance.
Each year, ISMAR solicits nominations for new Fellows from all regular members. The ISMAR Fellows Committee first evaluates the nominations. The Committee then selects up to 10 candidates from the nominations, based on criteria established by the Committee. The Committee then sends a list of candidates for current Fellows to vote on, based on both scientific achievements and contributions to the magnetic resonance community. From these candidates, a maximum of four new Fellows are elected.
Our warmest congratulations to Harald, Martin, and Yoshitaka!
