Funded PhD position – Breeze lab, Astbury Centre, University of Leeds, UK
We have a funded PhD position available to design, produce and investigate novel forms of bioengineered keratin (‘synthetic wool’) in the pursuit of more environmentally sustainable fibres for textiles.
The PhD scholarship is fully funded by (and hosted jointly with) the Leeds Institute of Textiles and Colour (LITAC), University of Leeds, at UKRI-matched rates and is open to UK-resident students only.
The student will use molecular biology and recombinant overexpression techniques to generate the bioengineered keratin proteins, which will be characterised using state-of-the-art structural and biophysical methods including cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) and NMR spectroscopy. Applicants with a background in chemistry, polymer chemistry, biochemistry, biophysics, biotechnology or similar disciplines are sought.
