PhD application in Paris

Dear colleagues,

We are looking for a motivated and talented MSc student to apply for a PhD scholarship at the doctoral school 397 at Sorbonne Université (http://www.ed397.upmc.fr/en/index.html).

The PhD topic concerns the comprehension of non-classical nucleation pathways of biomineral crystallization (calcium phosphate and carbonate phases) by means of solid state NMR spectroscopy. This project is focused on the understanding of pre-nucleation mechanisms and in particular the role of transient species such as prenucleation clusters and dense liquid phases before solid nucleation and crystallization. For this purpose, we use an original approach that couples a stopped-flow device with a freeze quench system to trap intermediate species at low temperature. The implication of mineralizing proteins such as osteopontin on the control and stabilization of the transient species will also be investigated.

The PhD work will be carried out at laboratoire de chimie de la matière condensée de Paris LCMCP (https://lcmcp.upmc.fr/site/) with a full access to the Sorbonne Université NMR platform (http://rmn.sorbonne-universite.fr/fr/index.html) that hosts 9 NMR spectrometers dedicated to research including 4 solid-state NMR spectrometers (2´300, 500 and 700 MHz).
